A Visit from SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange

On Tuesday, June 5th the Section was honored by a visit from SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange, who met with our Section's Chairman, officers and managers. The following is correspondence between Section Chairman Marty Feldman and Ms. Lange that we want to share with the entire membership.

Barbara—

Thank you for taking the time to meet with us last night. Not only did it give us an opportunity to learn what's going on beyond our own little world, but also how we might work more closely to help guide the society in a direction that best serves us all.

My managers were so appreciative of your willingness to listen to their ideas and discuss their concerns. This kind of exchange is truly rare and always welcome. You made us feel very comfortable indeed. I hope that this feeling was mutual and that it was as rewarding for you as it was for us.

I believe that we all came away with the belief that a discourse had been launched that ought to be nurtured and continued. Please visit us again!

Marty Feldman

Hi Marty -- The feeling is totally mutual — it was my great pleasure to meet all of you and to hear your concerns about the Society and how you'd like to see things move. I believe we are in a really important place both in terms of our industry and how SMPTE reacts to the challenges that lie ahead. How to involve more young people and how to get those IT/digital media people to know and care about a SMPTE organization are important next steps.

Clearly there are huge challenges ahead, but I believe we are also creating opportunities, too. And I am grateful to volunteers like yourselves who are so dedicated in seeing these things through and thereby making a difference.

I am really excited about an opportunity to work through the sports broadcasting sector to attract a new audience of SMPTE member, particularly younger ones. And given Boston's rich sports tradition, I think that would be an easy one to pull off. Let's really try to do this!

Thanks for your ongoing support. The Society is indebted to you for your service. I very much look forward to another visit, real soon!

With best regards,

Barbara
